Sir Patrick Stewart, the legendary actor who became a household name through Star Trek and X-Men, has died at 86, with his much younger wife, Sunny Ozell, by his side. But behind his celebrated career and seemingly happy later years was a deeply complicated personal life, marked by painful experiences he would eventually open up about.

Stewart died on Wednesday, October 28, at his home in Los Angeles, following what his family described as a "brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia." The announcement was shared on his official social media page, confirming that his beloved wife was with him during his final moments.

The statement also remembered him for his extraordinary career, philanthropy, and compassion, saying his family and friends had surrounded him with "live music, prayer, tears, laughter" during his final hours. The emotional family announcement paid tribute to the actor's humanity and the lasting impression he left on those around him.

But the story of the man who entertained generations of viewers began far away from Hollywood, in a small working-class town in northern England.

He Grew Up in a Working-Class Family With a Father Whose Past Followed Him Home

Born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, England, Stewart was the son of Gladys Stewart, a textile worker, and Alfred Stewart, a former army sergeant who later worked as a laborer.

He grew up in a modest household with his parents and older brother. His father had served in the British Army for 15 years and returned from World War II suffering from what was then called shell shock, now recognized as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Stewart later believed his father's wartime trauma contributed to his alcoholism and violent behavior toward his mother. Although Alfred never physically abused him or his brother, witnessing the violence left a lasting mark on the young actor.

It would take Stewart decades of analysis to understand the fear, shame, and guilt he carried from childhood. He eventually found that some of those painful experiences helped him portray complicated and intimidating characters on stage and screen.

But before acting became his escape, another unexpected influence would change the direction of his life.

He Left School at 15 and Tried His Hand at Newspaper Reporting

Stewart left school at 15 and became a junior reporter at a local newspaper, but his love of theater distracted him from the job. He later worked as a furniture salesman while saving money to pursue acting.

His interest had already been sparked by an English teacher, Cecil Dormand, who introduced him to Shakespeare.

An English Teacher Introduced Him to Shakespeare — and Opened a Door He Never Expected

Dormand gave the young Stewart a copy of The Merchant of Venice, and although he barely understood the language, he was captivated by its sound. He later recalled:

"I barely understood a word, but I loved the feel of the words and sounds in my mouth. A 400-year-old writer reached out a hand in invitation to me [and] I felt a sense of an internal, private me being released and connecting with something mysterious, alien and exciting. I was hooked."

Dormand encouraged him to pursue acting and helped pay for his first lessons. Stewart also trained with acting and voice coach Ruth Wynn Owen before earning a place at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 1957.

He Spent Years Performing Shakespeare Before Anyone Knew His Name

After making his professional debut in 1959, Stewart joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and built a career performing Shakespeare before moving into film and television. Despite his growing experience, international fame remained out of reach. An encounter after a theater performance later inspired the title of his memoir, Are You, Anybody?

A young woman approached him for an autograph but, after looking at him more closely, pulled away her book and asked, "Are you anybody?" Stewart replied, "No."

It was a small but memorable reminder that, despite years of dedication to his craft, his biggest opportunity had yet to arrive.

He Thought He Would Be Fired From 'Star Trek' — Then Became an International Star

In 1987, Stewart landed the role that would change his life: Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. At 47, the classically trained British actor was stepping into a major American television production, something he initially found difficult to imagine.

He was so convinced that the producers would eventually regret casting him that he refused to unpack his bags for six weeks. Stewart later explained that he believed he would not survive beyond the pilot episode.

"I thought the producers would come to their senses and realize they'd made a grave error in casting me. Eventually it become clear to me that not only wasn't I going to go away, the series wasn't going to go away. I stayed and have relished every moment [sic]."

The role eventually made him a global star, and he reprised Picard in several Star Trek films before returning to the character in Star Trek: Picard, which ran from 2020 to 2023. He also became widely recognized by a younger generation through his portrayal of Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, beginning in 2000.

His co-star Ian McKellen played Magneto, and their professional partnership eventually developed into one of the most enduring friendships of Stewart's life. The actor also continued to work in theater, performing in productions of A Christmas Carol, No Man's Land, and Waiting for Godot. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010 for his services to drama.

But while his professional life was finally flourishing, his personal life was taking a much more complicated direction.

His First Marriage Lasted 24 Years, but an Affair Helped Bring It to an End

Long before he became involved with Ozell, Stewart had married actress and choreographer Sheila Falconer. The couple wed in 1966, around the time his theater career was developing, and welcomed two children together: Daniel and Sophie.

Their marriage lasted 24 years, ending in divorce in 1990. However, the breakdown was not simply the result of their relationship growing apart. In Making It So, Stewart acknowledged that he had been unfaithful to Falconer with actress Jennifer Hetrick, a younger woman.

The actor later admitted that his decisions had contributed to the end of the marriage, something he would come to regret. Despite their separation, Falconer remained an important part of his family history as the mother of his two children.

Stewart's next marriage, however, would bring another complicated chapter to his romantic life.

His Second Marriage Also Ended — and Another Younger Woman Entered the Picture

After his divorce from Falconer, Stewart married Wendy Neuss, a producer of Star Trek: The Next Generation, in 2000. Their marriage lasted only three years, ending in 2003. By then, another relationship had become part of the actor's personal history.

Stewart became involved with actress Lisa Dillon, who was 23 when they met. He was 62 and still married to Neuss at the time. Their relationship continued from 2003 to 2007, eventually becoming a significant part of the actor's reflections on his failed marriages.

In his memoir, Stewart acknowledged the similarities between his relationship with Dillon and his earlier affair with Hetrick. He wrote, "I had cheated on my wife with a younger woman – again."

He also admitted that he needed to treat the women he became romantically involved with better, adding that his two failed marriages were his greatest regret. But the story did not end there. Years later, Dillon would publicly challenge the way Stewart described their relationship in his autobiography.

According to The Independent's report on Dillon's response, she described his account as "shameful" and accused him of "diminishing" their five-year relationship.

Dillon said she had felt "upset, angry and betrayed" after reading his account, particularly because she believed it presented their time together as a brief affair rather than a meaningful relationship.

Speaking to The Times, she explained, "The impression he gives is that our relationship was very fleeting – that I was a silly affair that broke up a marriage – and he got caught out. But it's not just about our nearly five years together – this is the most enduring friendship of my life. Or it was."

She added, "In my heart of hearts, I always felt he would honour me properly if he were to write about me." Dillon was also hurt by Stewart's suggestion that he might have confused his feelings for her with the emotions he experienced while performing romantic scenes on stage.

Dillon's comments revealed that the actor's account of their relationship had left a lasting mark on someone who once considered him a close friend.

However, Stewart's romantic life was about to take a different turn when he met a woman who would eventually become his third wife.

He Met Sunny Ozell While She Was Working as a Waitress — and Was Immediately Attracted to Her

Stewart met American singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell in 2008, shortly after his second marriage ended. At the time, he was performing in Macbeth at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, while Ozell was working as a waitress at a Brooklyn restaurant.

The encounter was far from a typical celebrity romance. Ozell was initially starstruck when the famous actor walked into the restaurant, but their conversation soon became more personal.

In an interview, Stewart recalled how she approached his table and offered dessert on the house because her manager had insisted. "It was an immediate attraction," he said. "When she came over to offer us dessert on the house – because her manager had insisted – we got talking."

Ozell told him she had wanted to see Macbeth, but tickets for the Brooklyn production had already sold out. Stewart offered her his telephone number and told her to contact him when the production moved to Broadway so he could arrange a ticket. It was an unusual gesture for the actor, who later admitted that he had never given his number to a woman he had just met in that way.

Their first date was not entirely straightforward, either. Ozell attended the intense production of Macbeth, in which Stewart's character's severed head was displayed on stage, but she found the experience overwhelming.

She later recalled being on the verge of leaving before the company manager found her. The two eventually went out for dinner, and their relationship developed gradually. They began spending Monday evenings together, attending musical performances and discovering shared interests.

Stewart was particularly impressed when he first heard Ozell sing. He admitted that he had previously been drawn to women partly because of their acting abilities, but her musical talent made a similarly strong impression.

After hearing her perform "The Tennessee Waltz," he was convinced. "Talent is very attractive. Never mind what anybody looks like. When you hear wonderful music, the appeal is almost irresistible."

She Was 39 Years Younger — and Her Father Initially Had Reservations About Their Romance

As their relationship became more serious, the age difference between Stewart and Ozell attracted considerable attention. The actor was 68 when they met, while Ozell was 29. She was eventually 39 years younger than him.

However, both appeared comfortable with the difference, and Ozell suggested that their personalities made it less noticeable. In the 2015 interview with Event magazine, she said:

"He is so youthful, and I guess I'm kind of an old worrywart, so we bridge the gap. It doesn't come up much. He's in better shape than me, which infuriates me."

Stewart was equally amused by conversations about his age, saying he remembered his 40th birthday as though it had happened the previous week. Ozell's father was initially less enthusiastic about the relationship, particularly because Stewart was five years older than him.

However, the two eventually became friends, with Stewart joking that Ozell's father sometimes called him and said, "Hey son, it's your father here."

Ozell also had to navigate another delicate aspect of the relationship: meeting Stewart's children from his first marriage. She said she approached the situation carefully because she did not want to force herself into their lives. "That was territory I trod on very lightly. I didn't want to force myself on them, but they were very welcoming."

Interestingly, Ozell did not immediately abandon her own career or independence after meeting the actor. She continued working at the restaurant for five years, sometimes attending award ceremonies in London before flying back to New York to work the following day.

She explained that the life she had built for herself was too important to simply give up. But as their relationship grew stronger, the couple eventually decided to make their commitment official.

Ian McKellen Officiated Their Wedding — But They Had to Marry Twice

Stewart and Ozell married on September 7, 2013, in Nevada, with the ceremony taking place on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Their wedding was officiated by Stewart's longtime friend and X-Men co-star Ian McKellen, who had obtained an online marriage license to perform the ceremony.

However, the couple later discovered that McKellen's ordination credentials were not accepted in Nevada. During a March 2020 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Stewart revealed that they had to arrange a second wedding at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles, with McKellen officiating again. The wedding mishap was also detailed in PEOPLE's account of the couple's relationship.

The couple eventually announced their marriage with a playful photograph showing them submerged up to their necks in a ball pit, accompanied by the words, "Yes, married."

By then, Ozell was establishing herself as a singer and songwriter in her own right. She released her debut album, Take It with Me, in 2015, followed by Overnight Lows in 2020, according to PEOPLE's profile of the singer.

Her musical career also found its way into her husband's television work when she appeared with her band in the second season of Star Trek: Picard. In an episode that aired on April 14, 2022, Ozell performed "Take You Down," a song from her second album.

The couple also supported each other's professional achievements. When Stewart received a Golden Globe nomination for Blunt Talk in 2016, Ozell was the first to discover the news.

He Called Her Someone He Had Never Met Before – and Said She Made Everything Better

As their marriage progressed, Stewart became increasingly open about how much Ozell meant to him. In a 2022 interview with PEOPLE, he praised her intelligence, curiosity, and ability to keep him engaged with the world.

"I've never met anyone like her before," he said. "She is so smart and so informed. And her intellectual accomplishments are extraordinary. She remembers everything." He also admitted that he had once expected to be retired by that stage of his life, but Ozell's enthusiasm and their shared experiences helped keep life interesting.

In another interview, Stewart described her as an extraordinary source of support, explaining that he tried to return the same love and encouragement she gave him.

"She is an absolutely sensational individual. I'm in love with her; I'm impressed by her. She provides me with so much support and help, which I try to return as best that I can. But I'm so fortunate that I'm in, well, I don't mean to say at the end of my life because I hope that's not where I am, and I don't want to be melodramatic, but her contribution to my life has been extraordinary."

"Happy 11th anniversary to my dear Sunny. You make everything better and brighter, my love," he wrote in the anniversary Instagram post. The affectionate message offered another glimpse into a marriage that had brought him considerable happiness after two earlier relationships ended.

Yet even as Stewart celebrated his life with Ozell, there was one part of his personal history that continued to cause him pain.

He Made a Heartbreaking Admission About His Relationship With His Two Children

Despite his success as an actor and his happiness with Ozell, Stewart's relationship with his children from his first marriage remained a source of profound sadness. In an interview about his memoir and his estrangement from his children, the actor admitted that he had become estranged from Daniel Stewart and Sophie, who were both in their 50s at the time.

He was asked whether it had been difficult to become the kind of father he wanted to be.

"It was. Given that I'm separated from my children now, we don't have relationships; they have become very important. I never thought that this would happen, but both my children are in their 50s; they're not children anymore, they're adults. And my relationship with them is practically non-existent."

When asked whether the situation had created a sense of grief, Stewart gave an answer that revealed just how deeply it affected him.

"Significant grief, yes. There's not a day that goes by that I'm not pained by the memory of my children, who they were and by a sense of responsibility that they became who they are in part because of me and my influence or lack of influence on them. I always put my acting work first, before my family."

It was a particularly painful admission from a man whose professional life had taken him around the world and earned him the admiration of millions. Stewart also described his relationship with his children as a "work in progress" in Making It So, suggesting that the possibility of repairing their connection remained important to him.

His son, Daniel, followed him into acting and appeared alongside his father in the 1993 television film Death Train and the sitcom Blunt Talk. He also played Picard's son in a 1992 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

But Stewart's reflections suggested that the professional opportunities he had enjoyed with his son could not replace the personal connection he wished they had maintained.

He Believed His Two Failed Marriages Were His Greatest Regret

The actor's complicated relationship with his children was not the only part of his personal life he wished he could have handled differently. In his memoir, Stewart openly reflected on the decisions that led to the breakdown of his first two marriages.

He acknowledged that his actions had hurt Falconer and Neuss, and admitted that he had not always treated the women in his life as they deserved. "I needed to do better by the women with whom I was romantically involved."

He then made a particularly revealing statement about how he viewed his life. "In a life chockablock with joy and success, my two failed marriages are my greatest regret."

When asked what he believed had driven his behavior, Stewart offered a surprisingly brief explanation. "Confusion." Asked what he had been confused about, he replied, "Who I was and what I was." He also said that he had made peace with his former wives to an extent.

His reflections showed a willingness to acknowledge the mistakes behind his failed relationships, even when doing so brought renewed attention to painful experiences involving other people.

For someone who had spent decades portraying men of authority, courage, and conviction, it was an unusually vulnerable account of the uncertainty he had experienced in his own life.
