15 Celebrity Ex-Couples Who Stayed Friends After Splitting — and the Unexpected Things They Did for Each Other

Most Hollywood breakups end with separate homes, awkward reunions, and years of speculation. But some famous exes have done things so unexpected after splitting that even their new partners became part of the story — and one confession decades later raised a question: was it ever really over?
From Hollywood's most unforgettable divorces to relationships that once seemed impossible to repair, these 15 former couples found surprising ways back into each other's lives. And some went much further than anyone would expect from an ex.
Demi Moore and Bruce Willis — A Divorce That Couldn't Break One Important Bond

Remember when Demi Moore and Bruce Willis were one of Hollywood's golden couples? They married in 1987, raised three daughters, and seemed to have the kind of glamorous family life that belonged on a magazine cover.
Their marriage ended in 2000, but instead of becoming two separate families, they preserved a connection their eldest daughter, Rumer, would later describe in touching words.

Rumer grew up watching friends whose divorced parents struggled to get along. Some children had to choose where to spend holidays, while others found themselves caught in arguments between their mother and father.
But her childhood was remarkably different. Demi and Bruce made sure their three daughters — Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah — never felt forced to take sides.

"I'm incredibly grateful that both of my parents have made such an effort my entire life that I never felt like I had to choose between them," Rumer said.
She remembered seeing other families divided over birthdays and holidays, but her parents made togetherness a priority. Rumer was grateful they could remain "a family, even though it looked different."
That bond became even more meaningful in February 2023, when Bruce's loved ones announced his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis. His wife, Emma Heming Willis, had the support of the women closest to him, including Demi and his five daughters.

A source close to the family shared at the time that they were "closer than ever." Emma was also said to have an enormous support system, something she was deeply grateful for.
For Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, the family their parents had worked to preserve was still there during a difficult time. But another famous actress took keeping an ex-husband close in a completely different direction — one that involved a tropical honeymoon.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin — There Was Someone Unexpected on the Guest List

When Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin announced their separation in 2014, their phrase "conscious uncoupling" quickly became a Hollywood talking point. After more than a decade together and two children, Apple and Moses, they were ending their marriage.

Gwyneth later married television producer Brad Falchuk in September 2018. Their beautiful Hamptons wedding was followed by plans for a Christmas getaway to the Maldives, but the guest list was far from ordinary.

A luxurious island holiday sounded like the perfect way to celebrate a new marriage. But what seemed like a romantic getaway for two turned out to have a rather unexpected guest list — including someone few newlyweds would ever invite.
It turned out Brad wasn't the only husband enjoying the getaway. Gwyneth's ex-husband, Chris Martin, had joined the honeymoon too, along with their children, Brad's children, and close family friends.
Gwyneth recalled a guest list including "my new husband and his children, my children, my ex-husband, our best family friends." She cheerfully described the arrangement as a "very modern honeymoon."
The actress said the vacation was filled with conversations, children, and good times. Apparently, spending a honeymoon with a former husband wasn't a problem for their family.
But not every celebrity would invite an ex on a romantic getaway. Another Hollywood actress had something equally surprising to say about a man who had been part of her life since the 1980s.
Elizabeth Hurley and Hugh Grant — What Did She Call Him Years Later?

Elizabeth Hurley and Hugh Grant were practically royalty among British celebrity couples of the 1990s. Their glamorous appearances and undeniable chemistry made them one of the era's most photographed romances.
They began dating in 1987, and their relationship remained in the spotlight for years. By 1995, they were still together, with their private lives attracting almost as much attention as their careers.

Their romance ended in 2000 after 13 years together. But despite their very public history, Hugh never completely disappeared from Elizabeth's life.
In February 2017, she attended a charity event in Los Angeles, where she was asked about their relationship. Her response was surprisingly affectionate for two people who had been apart for so long.

Although they never married during their 13-year romance, Hugh later became one of the godfathers to Elizabeth's son Damian, born in 2002 — two years after their split. | Source: Getty Images
"We are best friends," Elizabeth revealed, adding, "We look out for each other." Those were remarkably warm words about a man she had once imagined sharing her future with.
Their friendship survived long after the romance ended. But for another legendary couple, all it took was one backstage photograph to have fans wondering whether the past might return.
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt — One Backstage Moment Changed the Conversation

Few Hollywood couples inspired as much fascination in the early 2000s as Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. Their 2000 wedding and affectionate red-carpet appearances made them one of the industry's most beloved couples.

Then came their 2005 separation, a breakup that dominated entertainment headlines. For years, fans continued looking back at photographs of a romance that had once seemed picture-perfect.
On January 19, 2020, something happened that made those memories feel surprisingly fresh. Both stars attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where Jennifer won for The Morning Show and Brad was honored for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.

The evening had already given both actors reasons to celebrate. Then photographers caught a rather intimate-looking moment behind the scenes.
Brad and Jennifer greeted each other warmly, smiling as they exchanged a few words. In one photograph, Brad held Jennifer's hand as she turned to walk away.

The pictures quickly revived speculation about a possible reconciliation. But another intriguing story emerged about the woman who may have helped them reconnect.
An anonymous source claimed that Jennifer's close friend Courteney Cox had played a role in bringing the former couple back into contact.

According to the account, Courteney ran into Brad at a charity music event in Malibu in January 2017. Jennifer's name reportedly came up, and Courteney allegedly gave him her friend's phone number.

The claims were never independently confirmed, and the SAG photographs weren't evidence of a renewed romance. Still, the friendly reunion brought back memories for millions who remembered Jennifer and Brad's marriage.
But the next former couple had a much more practical reason to stay connected — two little children who would always come first.
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon — The Decision That Changed Everything

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon seemed to have a whirlwind romance when they married in 2008. Three years later, they welcomed twins Moroccan and Monroe, bringing two new little faces into their glamorous world.

Their marriage eventually ended, but the children were still growing up. There would be birthdays, school milestones, and holidays when both parents wanted to be present.
In 2020, Nick explained that having children had changed how they approached their relationship. Their romance was over, but their responsibilities as parents remained.

Rather than allowing their breakup to become a battle, the former spouses agreed to put their children's happiness first. Nick later described the decision that helped them move forward.
"It just made us say, 'Let's co-exist for the betterment of our children,'" he explained.
Nick said they wanted the twins to have the healthiest possible upbringing. He also dismissed suggestions that professional competition had caused their split, speaking admiringly about Mariah's extraordinary talent.

He even admitted he couldn't hold a candle to her abilities. And while Mariah and Nick focused on raising their children, another former couple discovered that working together again could change everything.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony — She Had One Surprising Answer About Her Ex

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony shared a marriage, two children, and a love of music. Their relationship unfolded through glamorous performances, while twins Max and Emme brought a new chapter to their family life.
After seven years of marriage, they separated in 2011, and their divorce was finalized in 2014. But several years later, they decided to do something that could have made plenty of former spouses nervous.

Marc began helping Jennifer produce a Spanish-language album, bringing the two musicians back into a close working relationship.

At first, Jennifer wasn't entirely sure it was a good idea. They were getting along as parents, but collaborating could have brought back their old disagreements.
Instead, something unexpectedly positive happened. Jennifer realized that working together was actually improving their personal relationship.

"We are like best friends," Jennifer said during a March 2017 appearance on Live with Kelly. She also admitted that their musical collaboration had brought them closer.
The singer was happy that Max and Emme could see both parents together, enjoying music and supporting each other. She explained that the arrangement was good for the entire family.

When Kelly asked whether Jennifer might marry Marc again, however, the singer laughed and quickly said "Oh no!" Apparently, being best friends was enough.
But another famous musician described his former wife in a very different way. His words sounded almost like a love letter written decades after a divorce.
Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz — The Words He Never Took Back

Long before Lenny Kravitz became a rock superstar, he was a young musician falling in love with actress Lisa Bonet. They became a couple in the mid-1980s, and sparks flew between them.
They married in 1987 and welcomed daughter Zoë the following year. Their distinctive style made them one of the most memorable celebrity couples of the late 1980s.

Their marriage ended in 1993, but Lisa had already left a lasting mark on Lenny's life. She had inspired his early music and helped shape the person he became.
In February 2024, Lenny looked back at their relationship with remarkable tenderness. Rather than focusing on why the marriage ended, he spoke about everything their years together had given him.

"I am what I am because of our experience," he reflected, crediting their shared history with helping him discover important parts of himself.
But his most emotional confession came when he described what happened to their feelings after divorce. He didn't believe that ending their marriage meant love had to disappear.

"The love doesn't leave you," he said, explaining that it must find another way to exist when two people begin different lives. Reaching that point had taken time, but Lisa remained part of his heart and soul.
Their marriage had ended decades earlier, yet the affection survived. For Ben Affleck, however, the story was less poetic — but his words about Jennifer Garner were just as revealing.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner spent ten years married, raising three children while balancing demanding Hollywood careers. Their separation in 2015 attracted enormous attention, and their private lives continued to make constant headlines.

But while the public followed Ben's changing romantic relationships, Jennifer remained an important presence in his life. They still had Violet, Fin, and Samuel to raise, regardless of what happened between them.

In March 2025, Ben discussed the enormous attention surrounding his private life. He recalled how tabloid magazines had printed exaggerated stories about his family, sometimes leaving him and Jennifer explaining the headlines to their children.

Behind the gossip, however, Ben described a relationship built around cooperation and respect. His words about his former wife were particularly warm.
"I'm really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner," Ben said, praising her as a wonderful mother with whom he worked well.

Ben also explained that he tried to arrange his workdays so he could be home when the children returned from school. While magazines focused on his romantic life, his family responsibilities remained a priority.
But another Hollywood actress showed support for a former husband in a much more unusual way. When she learned he was getting married again, she made an offer few ex-wives would ever dream of making.
Anna Faris and Chris Pratt — His Engagement News Got a Very Unexpected Reply

Anna Faris and Chris Pratt seemed like a perfect Hollywood comedy couple, sharing a sense of humor throughout their eight-year marriage. They separated in August 2017 but continued raising their son Jack, even as they moved on with new partners.

Then, in January 2019, Chris had some big news for his ex-wife — and decided to tell her personally.
Chris had proposed to Katherine Schwarzenegger and sent Anna a text rather than letting her discover the news through headlines. She later recalled her excited reaction on her podcast, but her reply came with an unexpected twist.

Anna reminded him that she was an ordained minister and could legally perform wedding ceremonies. In other words, she had jokingly offered to officiate her ex-husband's wedding — though she admitted she wasn't particularly good at it.
Behind the joke was genuine affection. Anna said she loved both Chris and Katherine and was thrilled they had found happiness together.

And her support didn't seem to stop there. When Chris and Katherine welcomed daughter Lyla Maria in August 2020, making Jack a big brother, Anna reportedly sent the new parents a gift.
The families had already spent time together in October 2018, when Anna and boyfriend Michael Barrett joined Chris and Katherine for Halloween with Jack. From an unexpected wedding offer to a baby gift, Anna had found more than one way to celebrate her ex's new chapter.
But another former couple sparked curiosity simply by being spotted together just weeks after their breakup.
Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson — What Were They Doing Together?

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson were one of Hollywood's familiar couples for almost a decade. Their relationship began in 2006, and they appeared together at film festivals, premieres, and glamorous red-carpet events.

Then, in July 2016, they announced their separation. After so many years together, it seemed natural that they would begin separate lives, but photographers soon captured a surprising scene.
Only weeks after their split, the two were spotted spending time together in Los Angeles. They weren't attending a premiere or posing for publicity photographs.

Instead, Diane and Joshua appeared to be enjoying a casual outing, chatting while picking up a bottle of wine.
Their unexpected meeting was documented in August 2016, shortly after they had announced the end of their relationship. The photographs showed the former couple looking comfortable in each other's company.

A casual meeting doesn't prove that former partners are getting back together or that they'll remain close forever. Still, seeing them together so soon after their separation was a rather unexpected sight.
For Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake, the situation was even more unusual. They didn't simply meet for an afternoon — they ended up working together in front of movie cameras, with an awkward twist in the script.

Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake were one of the glamorous couples of the early 2000s. They began dating in 2003, when Cameron was enjoying Hollywood success and Justin was becoming a major solo music star.
Their romance ended in 2007, and both continued building their careers. Years later, however, Hollywood presented them with a rather uncomfortable-sounding opportunity.

In 2011, they starred together in the comedy Bad Teacher. Their characters were romantically involved, meaning the actors had to revisit romantic territory long after their real-life relationship ended.
Some former couples might have found that unbearable. Cameron, however, had a completely different reaction.

She explained that they had always enjoyed making each other laugh and that Justin was perfect for the role. Rather than being awkward, their reunion became an opportunity to use the humor they still shared.

Their romance was over, but their professional chemistry remained. Another famous couple from the 1990s, however, faced a different experience — watching their children grow into adults after divorce.
Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe — An Old Hollywood Romance Had Another Chapter

Anyone who remembers the late 1990s probably remembers Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe. Their youthful romance, Cruel Intentions, and glamorous appearances made them one of the era's favorite couples.
They married in 1999 and became parents to Ava and Deacon. But after seven years of marriage, they announced their separation in 2006, attracting considerable attention from the press.

Their children were young when the marriage ended, so the former spouses continued sharing parenting responsibilities. Years later, Ryan revealed that he had never forgotten the confidence he once placed in Reese.

In October 2022, he recalled meeting Reese at her 21st birthday party and starting a family while they were still young. Even then, he believed she would be someone he could successfully raise children with.
"We did a good job as co-parents," Ryan reflected, explaining that he had always respected her as a mother. He also said he had never spoken badly about their shared past and still admired his former wife.
By 2021, their son Deacon was celebrating his 18th birthday, and his parents were photographed together for the occasion. The two young Hollywood stars who once posed as newlyweds had become parents of grown children.

Their marriage hadn't survived, but the family they created remained part of both their lives. For Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, however, staying connected wasn't simply something they discovered years later — it was a promise made almost immediately after their breakup.

But in September 2016, they announced their separation. Liev openly acknowledged that such a big change could be frightening.
Several months later, the actor discussed adjusting to life after their breakup. Instead of focusing on what had gone wrong, he talked about the future they would still share as parents.

Naomi's perspective was equally heartfelt, although she didn't pretend everything was easy. During a 2017 interview, she admitted that there were "good days and bad days" after the separation.
She explained that they were trying to do their best for the children and hoped to keep moving forward together as parents. Their family life had changed, but their shared commitment had not.

Yet another former couple had a very different story. Decades after a passionate Hollywood marriage ended, one of the world's most famous singers stood onstage and made a confession that sounded almost like a second declaration of love.
Madonna and Sean Penn — Decades Later, She Said Something Remarkable

Decades passed, yet their connection survived. In January 2016, Madonna attended Sean's charity gala in Beverly Hills, supporting his humanitarian work in Haiti — but her speech took an unexpectedly personal turn.

Madonna declared that she had loved Sean from the moment she first saw him. Then came her unexpected confession: "I still love you, just the same."
She even teasingly wished he would stop smoking so many cigarettes. Those affectionate words came nearly three decades after their divorce.

But in May 2025, Sean offered a surprising perspective of his own. He called Madonna a longtime good friend while admitting that, despite their passionate romance, they hadn't been right for each other as husband and wife.

Sean recalled that they had mistaken a good first date for a lasting partnership. He said it took roughly a year after their divorce to rebuild their friendship, and he still had fond memories of their time together.

Madonna's declaration of love and Sean's affectionate memories showed that their connection hadn't disappeared, even though their marriage had ended decades earlier. And the next Hollywood couple had an equally unexpected story — one that began on a movie set and eventually came full circle.
Courteney Cox and David Arquette — Who Could Have Predicted This in 1996?

Back in the 1990s, Courteney Cox and David Arquette fell in love while filming Scream. They married in 1999, welcomed daughter Coco in 2004, and eventually separated after more than a decade together.
But Courteney's feelings toward her ex-husband remained surprisingly affectionate. In 2012, she made a declaration few former spouses would expect to hear.

"He's my favorite person in the world," Courteney said. "He's my best friend. No matter what happens in our future, he's my very best friend."
And she backed up those words with actions, supporting David during his time on Dancing with the Stars after their separation. But did he feel the same way about her?

In 2013, David answered with an equally touching confession: "I love her, too." He also described his former wife as an amazing and beautiful person.
