Prince George, 13, Is Barely Recognizable Alongside William in Striking New Photos — See His Remarkable Year of Change

Prince George has spent his entire childhood growing up in front of the world's cameras, but his latest outing with Prince William revealed a change few royal watchers seemed prepared for. And while the public was only beginning to notice, his parents had been sharing surprising clues about their eldest son's transformation for months.
"Is it me or has Prince George altered," one viewer wondered after seeing the 13-year-old's latest appearance. Another was equally stunned, commenting, "Omgosh, that profile... he looks like William".

But behind the palace doors, George had been experiencing far more than a change in appearance. From ordinary teenage disagreements to a milestone that left Kate counting the days until her son came home, some of the biggest moments of his childhood had unfolded away from the cameras.
2024 — The Little Prince Who Had No Idea What Was Coming
On July 14, 2024, 10-year-old Prince George accompanied William to Berlin for the European Championship final between England and Spain. Football was already one of their favorite shared activities, and the young royal had become a familiar companion at his father's sporting outings.

But away from the stadium, 2024 had been an especially difficult year for the family. Kate was undergoing cancer treatment, King Charles was also facing his own diagnosis, and William was trying to balance his royal responsibilities with supporting his wife and children.
William later described the period as "the hardest year I've ever had," explaining that protecting his family had been his priority. Despite their public roles, he and Kate continued arranging their schedules around the children's school days whenever possible.

At home, George attended Lambrook School alongside Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, while family dinners and outdoor activities remained important parts of their routine. William and Kate also had a strict rule about smartphones, preferring to keep their children away from unrestricted internet access.
George was still years away from leaving the familiar school environment he shared with his siblings, and his public appearances largely revolved around family occasions. But as he approached his 11th birthday, his growing interests and independence were already beginning to show.
2025 — George Wanted Something William Wasn't Ready to Give Him
By spring 2025, George was accompanying his parents to a wider variety of public events. In May, he joined the family for the Victory in Europe Day commemorations, while his growing interest in history was already something William had begun noticing at home.

During an October interview with Eugene Levy, the Prince of Wales admitted that "George, my son, is way better at history than I am." William explained that he sometimes turned to his eldest son to check historical dates, a rather sweet reversal of the usual father-son arrangement.
George was also developing his own interests, although football remained something he particularly enjoyed with William. In April, the pair had traveled to Paris to support Aston Villa against Paris Saint-Germain, continuing a family tradition that would become especially meaningful as George grew older.

By July, George was celebrating his 12th birthday, and another summer of family outings was underway. Yet at home, his approaching teenage years were already creating a rather delicate disagreement between him and his parents.
During a November interview, William revealed that George was becoming increasingly interested in getting his own smartphone. The prince and Kate weren't ready to allow unrestricted internet access, and their eldest son wasn't particularly enthusiastic about that decision.

William admitted that the discussion had become "a little bit of a tense issue," although he believed George understood their concerns. He suggested that his son might eventually receive a basic phone without internet access when he moved to secondary school.
It was an ordinary parenting challenge for a boy whose future would be anything but ordinary. But as Christmas approached, William and Kate were noticing other changes in their eldest son.

In December, George joined Kate, Charlotte, and Louis at the princess's annual Christmas carol service. Meanwhile, William had planned something special for his eldest son, involving a place that held precious memories of Princess Diana.
On December 16, William brought George to The Passage, a London charity helping people experiencing homelessness, which Diana had introduced him to when he was just 11. The pair helped prepare Christmas lunch, while the charity's chief executive, Mick Clarke, later recalled that George was asking plenty of questions, "very much like his dad."

George also added his name to the visitors' book signed by William and Diana in December 1993. His grandmother never had the chance to meet him, but William was now sharing an experience she had introduced to him at almost exactly the same age.

On Christmas Day, Kate heard another rather personal observation about George while greeting well-wishers at Sandringham. One admirer predicted that her eldest son could eventually reach 6 feet 4 inches, making him even taller than William.
Kate laughed and replied, "I know, I swear, he's catching up with everybody, isn't he?" She had also previously revealed that George was already wearing the same shoe size as she did.

And while Kate was laughing about her son's height, another change was becoming noticeable during their family activities. Just weeks later, the princess would joke about why she no longer wanted George tackling her during rugby games.
2026 — Kate Admitted There Was Something She No Longer Wanted George to Do
In January 2026, Kate welcomed members of England's women's rugby team to Windsor Castle following their World Cup victory. While discussing sports with the players, she shared a funny admission about playing rugby with her children.
Kate joked, "I do not want to get tackled by George!" Her remark suggested that her eldest son had become strong enough for his mother to think twice before letting him knock her down during a family game.

On April 5, George joined his parents and siblings for Easter service at St George's Chapel in Windsor. The family photographs supported Kate's earlier comments about how quickly her eldest son was catching up with her in height.

But another change was approaching, one that would affect George's daily life far more than his growing stature. During an ordinary radio interview in May, William unexpectedly revealed that his eldest son was already getting used to spending nights away from home.
Speaking on Heart Breakfast, William mentioned that George had spent the previous night boarding at school. Although the 12-year-old was still attending Lambrook, he was beginning to experience a routine that would soon become a much bigger part of his life.
Until then, George had shared much of his school routine with Charlotte and Louis, with all 3 attending the same institution. But in September, he was expected to begin at Eton College, meaning his parents were preparing for their first child to leave home during the school week.
Before that happened, George enjoyed another outing with Kate, this time visiting RAF Coningsby. During the visit, they explored historic aircraft, including a Lancaster bomber, Spitfire, and Hurricane, and met the people responsible for maintaining them.
The experience gave George another opportunity to explore his interest in history, which had already impressed William. And with the summer approaching, the family was preparing for a birthday that would officially mark a new stage in his life.
A Birthday and One Very Teenage Answer
On July 12, George returned to Wimbledon with William, Kate, and Charlotte. The family outing offered a chance to compare him with photographs from the previous summer, just days before an important milestone.

On July 22, George turned 13, and his parents celebrated with a new portrait by Matt Porteous. But becoming a teenager wasn't just about a birthday, as one amusing exchange with William soon demonstrated.
During the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on August 1, William and Kate were invited to try riding a tandem bicycle. When someone asked whether the children would enjoy watching their parents attempt it, George immediately replied, "No."

"We embarrass you enough as it is," William joked, making those around him laugh. It was a familiar teenage reaction, even from a boy who would one day become king.
The family still had a few weeks of summer together before George's move to boarding school. And when September arrived, William would find himself returning to a place he remembered from his own childhood — this time with his son.
William Had Once Stood at Those Same School Gates — with Diana
On September 8, George began his first day at Eton College, accompanied by William and Kate. The move meant the 13-year-old would now live away from home during the school term, while Charlotte and Louis remained at Lambrook.

For William, the occasion brought back memories of September 1995, when Diana, Charles, and Harry accompanied him to the same school at age 13. More than 3 decades later, he was bringing his own son to Eton, following a family tradition Diana never lived to see continue.

George was beginning life with new classmates and responsibilities, while his parents adjusted to having their eldest child away during the week. And just weeks later, Kate would admit how much she was looking forward to having him back.
Kate's Emotional Admission After George Left Home
During an October 22 visit to a children's hospice and charity shop, Kate spoke with members of the public about the approaching school holidays. When a child mentioned the upcoming break, she replied, "My children break up tomorrow and I can't wait to have them all home."

Another woman who spoke with the princess later revealed that Kate had said she missed George and was especially looking forward to his return from Eton. After years of having all 3 children attending the same school, the Waleses were adjusting to a new family routine.

But George's autumn break would bring more than a reunion at home. William had planned another football outing with his eldest son, and the photographs from that trip would leave royal watchers stunned by how much he had changed.
George's New Photos Sparked Double Takes, and It Wasn't Just His Outfit
On November 3, George accompanied William to Barcelona to support Aston Villa in a Champions League match. It was his first public appearance since starting Eton in September, and his dramatically changed appearance immediately caught attention.
Gone were the traditional suits and ties. George wore a black Adidas sports jacket bearing Aston Villa's crest, while his longer face, more defined jawline, and relaxed hairstyle gave him a noticeably more mature look.

Standing beside William, the resemblance between father and son was striking, particularly in George's profile. Compared with his July photographs, the 13-year-old looked remarkably different after just a few months away at boarding school.
The transformation left royal fans amazed, with one viewer writing, "He had really matured since going away to school.Such a handsome young man."

George's casual outfit also caught attention, as another person commented, "No suits and ties. Finally wearing sporty casual clothes."

Others couldn't get over how much he resembled his parents. One viewer wrote, "He's got moms dark features and dad's face 💯. He looked just like dad as a baby."

The comparisons went all the way back to George's earliest childhood photographs, when he often looked like a little copy of William. But amid the excitement over his new appearance, one viewer offered a different reaction, writing, "He realized that the son grows up and all that's left are the beautiful memories."

And one photograph from the evening captured a moment that had nothing to do with George's height, his hairstyle, or his resemblance to either parent. It was a small gesture that brought the story back to something William had said long before his son became a teenager.
The Moment William Had Always Wanted to Remember
During the match in Barcelona, George was photographed resting his head against William's shoulder. The gesture was brief and affectionate, a moment of closeness between father and son amid the excitement of the football.

It wasn't the first time William had spoken about how much these trips meant to him. During their April 2025 visit to Paris, when George was still 11, the Prince of Wales had explained why he was so determined to share the experience with his son.
"Those memories are really important to create and bringing him along tonight is a big deal for me," William said. His words weren't about football results or the excitement of attending a Champions League game, but about having experiences together that they could remember for years.

Now, as George leaned against his father in Barcelona, there was no royal ceremony to follow and no speech to deliver. For a few seconds, he was simply a boy resting his head on his dad's shoulder — and William had another of those memories he had wanted so much to make.
