What started as a quiet Sunday near the water has turned into a headline-grabbing family drama. And this time, it's happening right outside Rep. Lauren Boebert's own front door.

The two-year-old grandson of Colorado Congresswoman Lauren Boebert wandered away from her Windsor homea property notably near a lake — sparking fresh legal trouble for her 20-year-old son, Tyler Boebert, this year (2026).

A Toddler, a Lake, and a Frightening Moment

According to a report from 9NEWS, the toddler slipped out of the lakeside house while Tyler was watching him on Sunday, February 15, 2026. Lauren was at an event in the district at the time. A "kind woman quickly and safely secured him," the congresswoman stated, adding that authorities were called "as a precaution."

As a result, Tyler was cited on a misdemeanor charge of child abuse without injury, as reported by Windsor Police. And here's where things take a turn…

This isn't the first time the toddler wandered from the same home. In fact, it's the second time in seven months that Lauren's young grandson has gotten out of the house, leading to another child abuse charge for Tyler.

Lauren, whose grandson frequently accompanies her around the district and in Washington, didn't mince words when reacting to the latest incident. She told 9NEWS there's "no excuse" and that she's "very frustrated this happened." The strong statement marks a notable shift in tone from last summer.

Déjà Vu at the Windsor Home

Back in July 2025, after a similar incident at her home, Lauren described it as a "one-time incident that we have addressed as a family." That earlier case also resulted in a misdemeanor child abuse citation for Tyler. The young man is now set to head to trial in April on the same charge for that similar incident.

Details from the previous case were reported by Westword, which revealed the charge stemmed from criminal negligence where no death or injury occurred, according to records obtained from the Windsor Police Department, which were also confirmed by the Weld County District Attorney's Office.

At the time, the congresswoman characterized the situation as "a miscommunication on monitoring my young grandson that recently led to him getting out of our house."

She also emphasized there was "no injury or physical abuse involved," and confirmed the family had met with Child Protective Services.

"Tyler has been doing a great job getting his life on track as a father and citizen over the past year [...] we are continuing to provide a safe environment for my boys and my grandson," reads part of the statement Lauren penned regarding the matter.

A Pattern of Legal Trouble

But the legal entanglements surrounding Tyler didn't begin — or end — there. The 20-year-old, who is Lauren's eldest son, has had several run-ins with law enforcement over the past few years.

In September 2022, he flipped his father's SUV into a creek bed, injuring his passenger, who also suffered multiple concussions and a severely lacerated hand. Though initially ticketed for careless driving, the case was later reduced to a defective headlights violation under a plea deal.

Then, in January 2024, Tyler himself called the police, reporting that his father, Jayson Boebert, had assaulted him. An arrest affidavit alleged Jayson "pushed Tyler to the ground and pushed his thumb into his mouth." Then came even more serious allegations…

In February 2024, Tyler faced felony charges tied to a string of thefts from vehicles and the use of stolen credit cards at gas stations in Rifle and Parachute. Over a dozen charges were struck down against him.

Ultimately, that October, Tyler pleaded guilty to a single charge of attempting to commit identity theft. A judge granted him a two-year deferred judgment, meaning the felony could be cleared from his record if he successfully completes 24 months of probation.

Under the terms, he was also ordered to complete 80 hours of community service and is banned from using controlled substances.

What Happens Next for Tyler Boebert?

It remains unclear whether the child abuse citation could impact that probation, which still has just under a year remaining. Tyler became a father in June 2023, making Lauren a grandmother at 36.

His toddler son has now found himself at the center of a very public family controversy. And with a second trial looming and questions about probation hanging in the air, the story may not be over just yet. For now, Lauren's own words echo loudest: "no excuse."
