According to KHOU, the Alvin Independent School District mourned the loss of Nicholas Gray, a student from Pomona Elementary School, after an incident on campus on February 10, 2026. His teacher reportedly realized what was happening instantly, followed him, caught up with him, and immediately began lifesaving measures.

Officials also stressed that student care and well-being remain central to the district's mission. "Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with our student's family, and we stand by ready to offer care and assistance in any way possible," they expressed.

Later, the district shared more details about the emergency response. Staff members reportedly called 911 right away, while the school nurse and campus police officer responded without delay and took "every possible measure to provide aid."

EMS continued lifesaving care after arriving at the school and transported the child to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A local official close to the incident said the grape had been lodged too far down.

Kenzie also shared what seemed to matter most to her about the little boy she knew best. "Most of all, he was protective and thoroughly loved anyone who came into his presence," she penned.

"His mother's pride and joy and one and only son. We were glued together, it was just he and I for so many years. My best friend is now my guardian angel and please pray for my family and I as we navigate the most difficult situation any of us could never imagine [sic]."

He also enjoyed building imaginative creations and diving into adventures filled with swimming, sand castle building, riding bikes and scooters, and all the excitement childhood is supposed to hold. In other words, he sounded exactly like the kind of kid people cannot help but smile about through tears.

He is also remembered as a proud third grader at Pomona Elementary who enjoyed learning, making friends, and sharing his kind heart with classmates and teachers. More than anything, the tribute notes, he loved his siblings and treasured the time they spent together.

Nicholas is survived by his parents, Kenzie and Nathan Gray Jr.; his siblings, Nathan Gray III, Jaylon Gray, Natalie Gray, and Nakobe Gray; along with grandparents, extended family members, and loved ones. Kenzie also admitted she had been overwhelmed by the support pouring in from the community. "I'm so very grateful and so proud… proud is an understatement to be Nicholas Gray's mother," she said.

His father, Nathan Jr., delivered a message that was simple, loving, and incredibly powerful. "I just ask that anytime you think of Nicholas, you think of positivity," he said.
