"Serving Baltimore City Public Schools for 23 years, Ms. Tolson was a very beloved member of our school community for seven years," Malcolm wrote.

She added that the educator was "a pillar of the school community, she was beloved by both students and staff." The letter also confirmed that Tolson passed away inside the school building, a detail that stunned many parents once it became known.

"With deep sadness, I share the devastating loss of one of our staff members, Ms. Deborah Tolson. Ms. Tolson served our school as a Math Interventionist and passed away over the weekend in our school building."

"At first I thought maybe they was looking for somebody they was chasing someone coming out of the woods," Lee said. "Because they focus, it was close focusing on the woods on the side of the building. So, after that I said, okay, I don't really know what's going on. I didn't hear nothing else."
