John Goodman Looks Unrecognizable in His Most Recent Photo — and the Reason Behind His Weight Loss Is Not What Fans Expected

While some fans were stunned by how different the actor looks today, his dramatic transformation has actually been years in the making — and the reason he first decided to change his life was deeply personal.

John Goodman has spent years transforming his health and lifestyle, but a new photo has made fans stop and look twice — and it comes with a story that goes far beyond simply losing weight. At 74, the actor looks dramatically different from the man many viewers remember as Dan Conner, but the journey behind that change began nearly two decades ago.

The latest wave of attention began after Wizards of Waverly Place actor David DeLuise unexpectedly crossed paths with Goodman while shopping.

DeLuise shared a selfie with the Roseanne star on Instagram, proudly documenting the encounter with someone he had admired since childhood. DeLuise captioned the photo, “He was my childhood!!” He continued, “Legend! I love that I get to say that to someone 😉 If you know, if you know.”

The seemingly simple grocery-store selfie quickly drew attention because of just how much Goodman has changed since his days as the beloved Dan Conner. A report from Us Weekly on August 8 noted that fans barely recognized Goodman after seeing the rare photo with DeLuise.

And while the latest picture may make the transformation look sudden, it was anything but. Goodman's transformation dates back to the 2000s, when he was open about struggling with alcohol and overeating.

Goodman Once Approached 400 Pounds – And Knew Something Had to Change

In 2007, he sought treatment for alcohol addiction and began working toward sobriety. Years later, Goodman described the decision as a necessary turning point in his life.

In an interview with The Guardian, Goodman explained that his drinking had become increasingly destructive. "It was getting to be too much," he said. "It was 30 years of a disease that was taking its toll on everyone around me, and it had got to the point where, every time I did it, it was becoming more and more debilitating. It was life or death. It was time to stop."

The actor also acknowledged that alcohol had affected his work, including his temperament, memory and depression. His sobriety would eventually become closely connected to another major change: the way he ate and treated his body.

He Admitted He Was Eating 'all the Time'

By 2010, Goodman had already lost more than 100 pounds. Speaking to People that year, he explained that he had come to realize how much of his life revolved around food.

"I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste," Goodman said. "It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you're going to eat next … I wanted to live life better."

Goodman had also stopped drinking three years earlier and began working with health coach Mackie Shilstone. He cut sugar from his diet and worked out six days a week, describing his approach simply:

"I'm breaking a sweat, but I'm not going nuts."

Shilstone told the publication that Goodman remembered what it felt like to be extremely heavy and did not want to return to that point. The change was becoming visible enough that even Goodman's wardrobe was struggling to keep up. He told People, "I just ordered some nice slacks. I finally got them, and they're too big now."

The Weight Loss Was Slow – And Deliberately Different This Time

Goodman's transformation continued over the following years, but he was careful not to treat it as a quick-fix project. In 2015, The New York Post reported that Goodman had lost about 100 pounds and stressed that his transformation had taken time.

Shilstone explained, "This didn't happen overnight — it's been an ongoing process." The trainer said Goodman followed a Mediterranean-style eating plan centered on foods including fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts and olive oil. Goodman also aimed for between 10,000 and 12,000 steps a day and incorporated a treadmill and elliptical bicycle into his workouts.

According to Shilstone, the key was not one dramatic intervention but a sustained lifestyle change. "There needs to be strategic planning," he said. "This time, he really wanted to do it."

Goodman Revealed the More Personal Reason He Wanted to Lose Weight

The diet and exercise changed Goodman's body, but the actor later revealed that his motivation went much deeper than fitting into smaller clothes. In a 2016 interview with ABC News, Goodman was asked about the dramatic difference audiences could see when he appeared in 10 Cloverfield Lane.

He explained that he had previously gone through cycles of losing large amounts of weight only to regain it. "I just stopped eating all the time," Goodman said. "I'd have a handful of food, and it'd go to my mouth. I was just eating all the time. I was just eating alcoholically."

He recalled that he had previously lost 60 or 70 pounds in a matter of months before rewarding himself with alcohol and returning to his old habits.

This time, however, he wanted to approach the change differently. "Then this time I wanted to do it slowly, move, exercise," Goodman said. "I'm getting to the age where I can't afford to sit still anymore. And it gives me the energy to work, 'cause work is very draining.'"

Then came the blunt explanation that perhaps says more about his transformation than any number on a scale. "I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You're shaving in the mirror, and you don't want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous."

That admission offered a much more personal explanation for the transformation audiences had been watching unfold.

For Goodman, Food Had Filled the Same Hole Alcohol Once Did

Goodman also drew a striking connection between his eating habits and his previous struggles with alcohol. He explained that he believed people could sometimes try to fill an emotional void with substances or food rather than confronting what was underneath it.

"I think you’re trying to fill a hole that can't be filled unless it's filled with goodness, some kind of spirituality, not saying religion," he explained. "But just a belief in something higher than yourself, a purpose."

"But instead of filling it with booze or cocaine or food, you just acknowledge that it's there. You can't fill it. And you go on and live with it." Goodman was not simply trying to become thinner. He was trying to build a different life.

Nearly Two Decades Later, Goodman Had Lost Around 200 Pounds

By 2023, the scale of the transformation had become even more remarkable. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Goodman said he had lost around 200 pounds. But even after losing that much weight, he did not portray himself as someone who had perfected a strict fitness routine.

Instead, he admitted that his exercise habits had fluctuated. Goodman said he had been boxing before the COVID-19 pandemic but had stopped exercising regularly, joking that he was "lazy." Walking his dogs became one of the simpler ways he stayed active.

He also said he wanted to return to a more consistent routine. "I was boxing up until then, and I haven't been able to do that since Covid because I'm lazy. I haven't been exercising, but I'm going to start a routine again this summer where I can get some stuff done. I've just let everything go just because I haven't had the energy because of the jobs," he said.

His approach to boxing was also fairly practical. Goodman explained that he mainly worked on hitting the mitts, hitting the bags, and learning footwork rather than regularly sparring.

His Transformation Was Still Visible Last Year

Goodman's weight loss has remained a noticeable part of his public appearances, even years after the initial transformation. A 2025 TODAY report noted that Goodman continued to maintain his slimmer appearance nearly two decades after beginning his healthier lifestyle.

The actor, then 73, had also been dealing with a hip injury sustained in the U.K., yet he still appeared noticeably slim at the Los Angeles premiere of Smurfs in July 2025.

His weight journey, however, has never been perfectly linear. In a 2018 interview referenced by TODAY, Goodman joked about the possibility of regaining the weight, saying, "I don't want to be an example to anybody when the weight comes thundering back on — when I start eating Crisco out of the can with a spoon and a side of confectioner's sugar."

He also reduced his approach to weight management to a surprisingly straightforward philosophy:

"It was basically just portion control, and 'I don't need it.'"

For generations of viewers, Goodman remains inseparable from Roseanne, where he played Dan Conner opposite Roseanne Barr. The role made him a household name and helped establish the larger-than-life presence that audiences came to associate with him. Goodman himself once admitted that he did not fully appreciate the show's success while he was living through it.

"This was at a time when you could still have a show that would bring in millions of viewers a night, and that’s gone. You can't have that anymore. We were in people's living rooms. They felt they knew us," he told ABC News.

He also acknowledged that his drinking was happening during that period and that he sometimes struggled to appreciate what he had. "I didn't appreciate it at the time. I started drinking a lot. Things were skewed. It was one of those things an alcoholic does. Whatever you've got isn't good enough. You always want more," Goodman said.

Looking back, he added, "If I felt great, I'd have to have a drink to make it greater, to have more fun. Looking back on it, I wish I would have appreciated more. I admired the hell out of Rosanne."
