A Family Vacation in Nicaragua Ended in Tragedy — and a Bereaved Husband's Post Is Breaking Hearts Online
A 41-year-old American CEO left for a family vacation and never came home — and the story of how she died is as shocking as the grief her husband has been carrying in public ever since.
What was supposed to be a fun-filled family getaway turned fatal in seconds, and the people who loved Kasey Grelle most are still trying to make sense of it.
The mother of three had taken her children on vacation to a coastal resort in Nicaragua when the unthinkable happened. In the weeks since, her husband David has been sharing raw, unfiltered grief online, and his words are stopping people cold.

A Morning Tour That Turned Deadly
On the morning of March 23, 2026, Kasey and her kids were on a guided tour organized by Rancho Santana, an upscale resort located in Tola, in Nicaragua's Rivas department.
The tour vehicle — a truck believed to belong to the resort — was making its way down a hill when the driver lost control. The truck rolled, sending approximately 28 tourists, mostly family members, into chaos.

Kasey died while being transported to the Gaspar García Laviana Hospital in Rivas. She had suffered severe injuries across her body, including two skull fractures. She was 41 years old.
More than 20 others were injured in the crash, including several minors. Among the most critically hurt was a 14-year-old American teenager — identified only by initials — whose right arm had to be amputated despite medical efforts.

He was later transferred to the Vivian Pellas Hospital in Managua at his family's request.
She Was a 'Superhero' to Her Kids
Kasey left behind her husband Dave, and their three young children: Julian, 11; Kit, 9; and Des, 6. Julian had been in the vehicle with his mother during the crash.
He was critically injured — airlifted to St. Louis Children's Hospital, where he is recovering in the ICU with head trauma, skull fractures, spine fractures, and a collapsed lung.

In true form, the GoFundMe set up for the family describes Julian as cracking jokes with friends, watching the Cardinals, and tracking his March Madness bracket from his hospital bed. "He's his mother's son — tough and brave," the page reads.
Kasey's brother Andy Joyce was among the first to break the news publicly. In a Facebook post, he described her as "one of the most brilliant, driven and selfless people" he had ever known — someone who was "relentless in everything she did, especially when it came to helping her people."

The Posts That Broke the Internet
It was Dave's own words, though, that hit hardest. On April 1, just days after burying his wife, he posted a tribute that has since spread far beyond his circle of friends and family.
"This can't be real. I miss her so much. I thought we'd grow old together, always in love." He wrote about their fights and their laughter, about how fiercely she loved.

And then, simply: "She was a superhero to our kids, her friends, family, community… me." The post didn't try to be poetic or polished. It was just a man in pain, writing things down.
"This pain… It takes my breath away, but not the way she used to with her smile. I can't breathe with this hole in my chest. There's a hole in my universe."

He recalled how she would look into his eyes every day and tell him, "You're my person."
Two days later, on April 3, Dave posted again, this time, just four lines: "Don't take a day for granted. Live your life. Love your people. We did. I'm so glad we did."

Who Kasey Was
Beyond being a devoted mother, Kasey was a co-founder and CEO of Aux Insights, an international marketing consulting firm focused on data-driven portfolio growth for private equity-backed companies. By all accounts, she was as formidable in business as she was at home.
The GoFundMe page paints a fuller picture of the life she built — and the weight she carried. In 2016, Dave was struck by a car as a pedestrian and nearly died.

Kasey, nine months pregnant at the time, spent sleepless nights at his bedside. After his recovery, she became the family's primary breadwinner while Dave continued to heal from chronic pain. She held everything together without complaint.
Now it is Dave and the children who must find a way to carry on.

A Community Rallies
The GoFundMe campaign, organized by Juliana Rodas — a woman who worked for the Grelle family for over six years and considers them family — initially set a goal of $250,000.
It has since been surpassed by nearly 40 percent, with over $344,000 raised from hundreds of donors. The funds are going toward Julian's ongoing medical care and rehabilitation, the costs of medical evacuation from Nicaragua, funeral expenses, and long-term support for three children who lost their mother far too soon.

Kit and Des, the two younger children, are at home with family, trying to understand a world that no longer looks the way it did before March 23.
As for the resort, Rancho Santana has not publicly commented on the circumstances of the crash. Nicaragua's National Police have opened an investigation, though no findings have been released.

Dave has said he and the kids will sing Kasey's favorite songs and celebrate her every day. But for now, as he wrote himself: "It hurts like hell." 💔
For now, the story remains one of sudden loss, and the words left behind by those who loved her most.
