A Final Public Appearance That Now Feels Different

The tragedy came only days after Claude carried the torch at Montreal's Bell Center before the Canadiens faced the Hurricanes in Game 3 of the NHL Eastern Conference Finals, as reported by the New York Post.

That appearance has taken on a new emotional meaning for many fans, especially after social media viewers reflected on the moment in the days following his death. One commenter wrote, "You never know what's really going on behind a man's smile. 🙏"

Claude's trophy case reflected the impact he made on the sport. Along with winning four Stanley Cups, he captured the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1995 after leading the New Jersey Devils to their first championship. His postseason excellence eventually earned praise from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who remembered him as:

"One of the greatest big-game players in hockey history."

The Photo That Captures His Championship Legacy

One of the most emotional tributes shared after his passing came from his daughter, Claudia Lemieux Bishop.

The Family Man Behind the Fierce Competitor

While Claude built a reputation as one of hockey’s toughest competitors, those closest to him often described a very different side. A New York Times profile revealed that his second wife, Deborah Lemieux, initially found him intimidating when they first met.

Claude recalled, "She thought I was a mobster." Deborah, however, offered a much softer description of the man she married, saying, "He's a big old bear. People think he's so tough. But he's so easygoing."

The same profile recounted the couple’s wedding in the Bahamas, where Claude sang, "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" He later admitted, "I was pretty proud of myself. But I was nervous. I was a wreck."

Before his marriage to Deborah, Claude had been married previously. A 1995 New York Times article noted that his first marriage ended in a costly, bitter divorce and that he found purpose in raising his sons, Christopher and Michael. Together, Claude and Deborah later welcomed two more children, Brendan and Claudia Lemieux.

A Hockey Legacy Passed Down to His Son

The Lemieux hockey legacy did not end with Claude. His youngest son, Brendan, followed him into professional hockey and once spoke glowingly about his father's influence in a USA Today interview.

Brendan said, "My dad is my biggest role model on and off the ice. I'm proud of the career he had. I'm proud of the way he played, how hated he was. I just love that about him. I definitely want to follow in his footsteps. I want to be the guy that can step up and be that playoff performer."

Following Claude’s death, Brendan shared another emotional message on Instagram, writing, "I love you dad! My son's favorite person is going to watch from above for a while. We will see you ♥️"

The tribute offered a glimpse into another important chapter of Claude's life — his role as a grandfather.

The Grandchildren Who Brought New Joy

In February 2026, Claudia announced the birth of her daughter in a touching Instagram post. She wrote, "The love of our life 💗 I want to live in the newborn bubble forever and ever with you. It's been the most special and beautiful first weeks of our lives. We love you more than you could ever even imagine, baby girl. You are our everything and more 🎀"

Another recently shared image offered a glimpse into the role Claude appeared to cherish most in his later years. In a photo posted to Instagram Stories by Kate Monahan, the NHL legend is seen sitting in a waterfront restaurant, gently holding a baby in his arms.

Dressed casually in a dark shirt and baseball cap, Claude cradles the child against his chest as boats and blue skies are visible through the large windows behind them, creating a peaceful family moment far removed from the intensity of the hockey rink. The Story was captioned, "One of a kind," a message that now carries even greater emotional weight.

Another tribute shared by his daughter-in-law, Brookie, offered a glimpse into the bond Claude appeared to have built with the youngest members of his family.

In one image, Claude is seen smiling while holding a baby inside what appears to be a church or chapel. Dressed in a dark suit jacket and light blue dress shirt, he cradles the child in front of a stained-glass window depicting a religious figure, while floral arrangements and a wooden altar can be seen in the background.

The Story was overlaid with the simple but heartfelt message, "We love you so." The touching photo captures a proud and affectionate moment that contrasts sharply with the fierce competitor hockey fans knew for decades.

A second image shared by Brookie showed another side of Claude's life away from the rink. Sitting in a golf cart on a sunny course, he is pictured alongside a young child dressed in a light blue outfit and a matching cap.

The pair sits closely together on the cart seat while Claude wraps a protective arm around the child, creating a candid family moment. Overlaying the image was the message, "His favorite person in the world."

The photo takes on even greater significance following Brendan Lemieux's tribute. Together, the messages paint a picture of a grandfather who was deeply cherished by his family and friends in the final years of his life.

Tributes Continue to Pour In

Public figures also joined former teammates, friends, and family members in mourning Claude's death. President Donald J. Trump paid tribute to the four-time Stanley Cup champion, describing him as one of hockey's fiercest competitors. The president wrote:

Claude Lemieux, a true Legend of the Game, and one of the fiercest competitors Hockey has ever seen, has passed away. Claude was a friend to the family, and a tremendous "TRUMP" supporter. He won 4 Stanley Cups with 3 different Teams — Montreal, New Jersey, and Colorado — His 80 Career Playoff Goals rank among the All Time Greats."

Among the most emotional tributes shared after Claude's passing was an Instagram Story from former NHL player Chris Nilan. The image showed three men standing together in what appeared to be a private hockey hospitality suite, surrounded by memorabilia and memories.

Nilan overlaid the photo with a message that read, "You never know when you're going to see someone for the last time God Bless RIP Claude." Knowing what happened days later transforms the image into something far more powerful — a snapshot of friendship that unknowingly became a final goodbye.

"Brendan, my thoughts are with you, Deborah, and the whole Lemieux family — You and your Dad were Warriors on the Ice. Claude will be missed by all who love Winning and Toughness," he added.

Remembering a Hockey Legend

Claude's career was never ordinary. Teammates admired him, opponents disliked him, he was feared in the playoffs, and he was remembered as one of hockey’s most effective postseason performers.

Today, the championships, records, and accolades remain part of his legacy. But for many readers, it may be the family photos, heartfelt tributes, and deeply personal memories that reveal the fullest picture of the man behind the legend.
