The actress, 31, and the Grammy-winning producer and Bleachers frontman, 42, have separated, PEOPLE confirmed. One source described their relationship as "rocky," while another said the pair are "figuring things out." Neither Qualley nor Antonoff has publicly addressed the separation. Their representatives also did not respond to the publication's requests for comment.

Qualley and Antonoff Romance That Moved Quickly from Brooklyn to the Altar

Qualley and Antonoff first sparked romance rumors in August 2021 after they were spotted kissing during a date in Brooklyn. They took their relationship public the following year when they attended an AFI Awards Luncheon together in support of Qualley's Netflix series "Maid."

The pair became Instagram official in March 2022, and their engagement was confirmed that May. Antonoff later revealed that he had asked Qualley's sister, Rainey Qualley, for her blessing shortly before proposing in Paris.

During an April appearance on "The Howard Stern Show," Antonoff said he knew he wanted to marry Qualley the "second" they met at a party in 2021. "I saw her, and it was like a [expletive] Hallmark movie that doesn't seem believable," he said. "When I met her, I started imagining things that I'd never even imagined, like marriage."

Qualley and Antonoff married in August 2023 in New Jersey. Their wedding drew a celebrity guest list that included Taylor Swift, Channing Tatum, Zoë Kravitz, Cara Delevingne, and Lana Del Rey.

Qualley Found 'My Person' — and Her Mother Saw the Match Too

Before the wedding, Qualley spoke about Antonoff with a certainty that makes the current news particularly striking. "I am so happy that I found my person," she told Harper's Bazaar. "And it's real. It's amazing. It's the best feeling in the world. I'm so excited and so at ease all at once."

Qualley explained that meeting Antonoff had also changed the way she thought about building a home. Before their relationship, she said, her focus had largely been on her acting career.

"Until about a month before I met Jack, I never had any furniture. I would always have these [expletive] little apartments and move around from one place to another with a mattress on the floor and an Ikea lamp," she said.

"I never made a home at all. I didn't care; I cared about movies. I would use my sister's basement in L.A. as a spot to keep my things. But I didn't invest in that part of my life. It's really exciting now to be making a home and to have something to care for," Qualley added.

The actress said she "just want[ed] to do everything with Jack," though she was not yet ready to start a family. "One day, I want kids, and I'm not there yet, and I want to keep doing movies. And that's about all I know," she said.

Qualley's mother, Andie MacDowell, was similarly enthusiastic about the marriage. During a 2024 appearance on "The Drew Barrymore Show," the actress offered a glowing assessment of her son-in-law and the newlyweds, according to PEOPLE:

"He's so nice. They're really good together….they're fun and very well matched," MacDowell said.

And as news of the separation spread, some fans began asking whether there was more behind it than the couple had publicly shared.

A Question Emerges as Fans Look Back for Clues

Online speculation has focused heavily on unverified rumors of infidelity, although neither Qualley nor Antonoff has said that cheating played any role in their separation. For some observers, however, the questions have become difficult to separate from several developments that preceded the news.

Only months earlier, the couple had still been combining their personal and creative lives. As TMZ reported, Qualley appeared in the Bleachers music video for "You and Forever," a title that now feels unexpectedly poignant. Antonoff had also spoken openly about their decision to continue working together despite the attention surrounding their relationship.

In a May interview with The Irish Times, he explained that he and Qualley had planned to make a video together for each Bleachers album. "Our plan was always to make one video for every album, so we could telegraph how we are experiencing the world in that time as our lives go on, as partners. I thought it was a beautiful idea," Antonoff said.

He also said he would not allow public scrutiny to dictate how he lived. "I haven’t become more private because of being seen publicly. I haven't become more angry. I haven't become more anything. I give that part of my life no power," he said.

The couple's relationship had also inspired music beyond Bleachers. Del Rey named her 2023 song "Margaret" after Qualley, and the track featured Antonoff's band.

Del Rey later said Antonoff's marriage had influenced her own outlook on relationships. "I'm grateful for [Antonoff], for his example that he gave me in his marriage to Margaret," she said at a 2024 event. "I saw the way he looked at her when he met her, and he's a big reason why I waited so long to get married and why I met my amazing husband."

Then, Fans Began Noticing Changes

Qualley and Antonoff were last publicly photographed together at the 2026 Grammy Awards in February. In the months that followed, observers began pointing to changes that they believed suggested trouble.

Rumors had been circulating before the separation was confirmed. According to The Daily Beast, fans noticed on July 7 that Qualley appeared to have removed photos from the couple’s 2023 wedding from her Instagram account.

Fans also noted that Bleachers had reportedly dropped "Margaret," Antonoff's love song inspired by Qualley, from the band's latest tour setlist.

Then came another conspicuous absence. Just days before news of the separation emerged, Antonoff attended Swift and Travis Kelce's July 3 wedding with his fashion designer sister, Rachel Antonoff. Qualley was not with him, according to PEOPLE's coverage.

Still, another detail complicated the picture. At 10:48 a.m. PT on July 8, TMZ reported that Antonoff had been spotted wearing his wedding ring.

Speculation about the Split Intensifies

Without a public explanation from Qualley or Antonoff, fans began filling the silence with theories. Several comments centered on unverified cheating rumors, while others speculated that the relationship's dynamics may have changed as Qualley's profile grew.

One Reddit commenter claimed, "There were rumors going around that they were cheating on each other (MQ with Drew Starkey and JA with various people while on tour)."

"There were also rumors that he's possessive and an insecure partner. I think she took their wedding photos down from her Instagram over a month ago, so the writings been on the wall for this couple for a while," the reaction continued.

Another commenter speculated, "Not very surprised about this, I remember seeing videos of them from various award shows they attended last year and in a lot of them he didn’t look very thrilled - to put it mildly - with all the attention she was getting."

"She wasn't as famous as she is now when they got married 3 years ago, and I wouldn't be shocked if the dynamics between them changed after she blew up. I think there's a reason most of these A-list (or in their way there) actresses tend to go for relatively unknown men," the commenter continued.

Similar claims circulated on X. One commenter claimed, "She finally got tired of his cheating, good for her."

Not everyone was interested in guessing what happened behind closed doors. One person reacted to the breakup with a more reflective message, "Seeing couples who looked genuinely deeply in love call it quits always makes you question everything. Hope they both find peace."
