The clearest sign that something had shifted in the actor's fiercely private personal life came not through an announcement, but in a few tender words delivered onstage in Paris. Months later, those words would carry far more significance than anyone watching could have known.

For years, Jim Carrey sounded remarkably certain that marriage was no longer part of his plan. But somewhere along the way, a relationship he kept almost entirely out of the spotlight appears to have changed that.

The 64-year-old actor is now married again, marking a significant turn for a man who once said he did not see another trip down the aisle as necessary. And the story behind his new wife has been unfolding quietly for several years.

Jim Carrey Once Said He Did Not See Marriage as 'Necessary'

Long before news of his latest wedding emerged, Carrey had spoken with striking candor about whether he would ever marry again. After two divorces, the actor said, "I just don't see it as necessary," while discussing the possibility of another marriage, according to E! News. Still, even then, Carrey left himself a little room to be surprised by life.

During a 2014 appearance on "The Howard Stern Show," he explained, "I can't say that I know how I would feel if I meet somebody that knocks my head off." "I can't make hard, fast rules about the future," he continued. "But I wouldn't voluntarily go that way."

Those remarks have taken on a very different meaning following his latest relationship development, with HELLO! and The Sun also revisiting his past reluctance to marry again. And it was far from the only time Carrey suggested that two marriages might have been enough.

He Previously Said He 'Probably Won't Get Married Again'

Carrey's first marriage was to former actress and Comedy Store Waitress Melissa Womer, whom he married in 1987. The couple, who share a daughter, Jane, divorced in 1995. Then came another relationship closely tied to one of the most famous stretches of Carrey's career.

He married his "Dumb and Dumber" costar Lauren Holly in Los Angeles in September 1996 after the two appeared together in the hugely successful 1994 comedy. But their marriage was brief. According to a recent People retrospective on Carrey and Holly's relationship, they divorced less than a year later and listed June 1997 as their separation date. Their romance unfolded while both stars were experiencing major career changes.

"At the beginning, I was the one who was more well-known," Holly recalled during a May appearance on Sophia Bush's "Work in Progress" podcast. Holly acknowledged the scrutiny surrounding their relationship but also remembered their time together as something that helped both of them professionally.

"We definitely sort of highlighted each other in a lot of ways," she said. "If you look back at what we were both doing in our relationship, it's really cool because we were both, you know, growing exponentially, and I think we helped each other."

Carrey's career had exploded around that period thanks to "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Mask," and "Dumb and Dumber," all released in 1994. Holly, meanwhile, had initially met Carrey while auditioning for "Ace Ventura." Their union was the second marriage for both stars.

Years later, Carrey appeared to have developed an even firmer view about marrying for a third time. While dating Jenny McCarthy in 2008, he told Britain's Weekend magazine, "I probably won't get married again. If you've done it twice, you really should stop doing it." Carrey and McCarthy ultimately ended their five-year relationship in 2010.

His Past Relationships Included Painful Chapters

Carrey's romantic history also included a relationship with Irish Makeup Artist Cathriona White, whom he reportedly first dated in 2012 before the pair reunited years later. White was found dead at her Los Angeles-area home in September 2015 at age 30, shortly after she and Carrey had reportedly split.

According to Los Angeles Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter, an overdose was suspected as the apparent cause. Carrey's statement following her death reflected the enormous grief he was experiencing at the time.

"I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona," he said in a statement reported by The Telegraph. "She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled," Carrey continued.

He added, "My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt."

A Los Angeles coroner's official told the outlet that friends who were concerned about White discovered her at her residence sometime after 8 p.m., reportedly with pills near her. They called 911 and reported it as a suicide. The official also said there was a note that either referenced Carrey or was addressed to him.

Earlier that month, Carrey had shared photographs taken by White on X. In her own final X message, posted on September 24, White wrote, "Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest." The aftermath of White's death later became contentious.

In 2016, White's mother, Brigid Sweetman, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Carrey, following a similar lawsuit filed by White's estranged husband. As the BBC reported at the time, Carrey's lawyers described the allegations as "bogus" and "categorically disputed."

Sweetman also alleged in court papers that her daughter had left a note describing how she had been called a derogatory term and "an opportunist" by Carrey. "Every mother and father that has a daughter should read Cat's handwritten letter to Jim and decide for themselves what kind of guy he really is," Sweetman said at the time.

The court documents said Carrey was being sued for wrongful death and violation of the drug dealer liability act. His legal team disputed the allegations.

Another Romance Became Public in 2019

Years later, Carrey stepped onto a red carpet with another woman from his professional world. He was linked to his "Kidding" costar Ginger Gonzaga, and the pair made their red carpet debut as a couple in January 2019 at the Showtime Golden Globes Nominees Celebration in West Hollywood.

A representative for Carrey confirmed at the time that Gonzaga was his girlfriend. However, the romance did not last. Us Weekly reported in October 2019 that the couple had separated after less than a year together.

By the next few years, Carrey was increasingly talking not about romance but about how content he had become with a quieter existence away from Hollywood's constant glare. And that makes what was quietly happening in his personal life at roughly the same time all the more interesting.

Carrey Said He Had 'Enough' in His Quiet Life

While promoting "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" in April 2022, Carrey suggested that he might be ready to walk away from acting — or at least step back considerably. When Access Hollywood Host Kit Hoover asked whether he was serious about retiring, Carrey replied in the interview, "I'm being fairly serious." "It depends," he added. "If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink, that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I'm taking a break."

Carrey explained that he had found considerable satisfaction outside the spotlight. "I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life," he said. Then came perhaps the most revealing part.

"I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough," Carrey said. Yet at almost exactly that point in Carrey's life, there was apparently someone quietly sharing part of that existence with him.

A Woman Had Already Appeared Beside Him

In February 2022, Carrey made a rare public appearance at a charity comedy show hosted by Judd Apatow at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles…and he wasn't alone. Just Jared published photographs showing the actor leaving the event with a woman identified at the time as Minzi.

There was little fanfare surrounding the appearance, and Carrey continued keeping his personal life remarkably private. But the woman photographed with him that night would turn out to be far more significant than the brief sighting initially suggested.

The woman is Min Ah, who has also reportedly been referred to as Minzi. Very little public information about her has emerged. According to HELLO!, she was identified following that 2022 outing as a Los Angeles-area actress and artist.

Carrey and Min Ah appear to have been together for at least several years, but they managed to keep their relationship largely away from public view. It would take until February 2026 for the relationship to receive a far more public acknowledgment, and this time, Carrey himself left little doubt about what she means to him.

He Called Min Ah His 'Sublime Companion'

Seven months before news of their marriage became public, Carrey attended the César Awards in Paris, where he received an honorary award. Min Ah was there alongside Carrey's daughter, Jane, and grandson, Jackson. During his acceptance speech, which he delivered entirely in French, Carrey publicly acknowledged the people closest to him.

"Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you now and forever," Carrey said, according to People. Then he turned his attention to the woman who had spent years almost entirely outside the glare of his celebrity.

"Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah," Carrey said as she, Jane and Jackson received ovations from the audience. "I love you, Min Ah."

Carrey finished that portion of his remarks with a tribute to his late father, Percy, whom he called "the funniest man I have ever known" and credited with teaching him the value of "love, generosity, and laughter."

The César appearance effectively marked Carrey and Min Ah's public debut as a couple after years of being spotted much more quietly. And just seven months after he called her his "sublime companion," their relationship reached a milestone that once seemed especially unlikely for Carrey.

Jim Carrey and Min Ah Married Quietly

On September 30, 2026, a spokesperson for Carrey confirmed that the actor and Min Ah are married. The wedding itself appears to have been every bit as discreet as the relationship that led to it. Sources familiar with the situation told TMZ that Carrey and Min Ah recently married in a small, private ceremony in Los Angeles.

Few other details about the wedding have been made public. There has been no elaborate public rollout surrounding the ceremony, fitting neatly with Carrey's years-long tendency to keep his personal life quiet. The marriage makes Min Ah the woman who ultimately changed the ending to one of Carrey's most emphatic old declarations.

He had once said another marriage was unnecessary. Later, he said that after doing it twice, a person "really should stop doing it." And in 2014, he admitted there was only one thing that might make those declarations less certain: meeting somebody who completely changed how he felt.

More than a decade later, Carrey has now married for a third time, and the woman beside him is the same person he proudly introduced to the world as his "sublime companion."
