Courteney Cox and Daughter Coco Arquette Make a Rare Joint Appearance in Matching Black Dresses at TIFF — Photos

Courtney had plenty to celebrate at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, but one of the sweetest moments surrounding her new film happened when her daughter joined her. The mother-daughter appearance came after years of work to bring Evil Genius to the screen—and the photos tell the rest of the story.

Courtney brought Evil Genius to TIFF on September 12, marking a major moment for the actress as she returned to feature-film directing after a 12-year gap.

The project is her second feature as a director, following 2014’s Just Before I Go, and getting it to the screen was hardly a quick process, according to IndieWire.

A Long-Awaited Film Brings the Family Together

In an interview with IndieWire, Courtney explained that it took eight years to get Evil Genius off the ground, with the COVID-19 lockdown and two industry strikes contributing to the lengthy development process.

"It took me eight years to get this off the ground," she said, explaining that she had continued directing television and music videos while waiting for the right story to come along.

The story was one Courtney simply could not let go. She became interested in Evil Genius after meeting documentary filmmaker Barbara Schroeder at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where Schroeder told her the project was available to direct.

"I couldn't let [the story] go because I loved it," Courtney told The Hollywood Reporter. The resulting film takes on the bizarre 2003 "pizza bomber" case, in which Erie, Pennsylvania, pizza deliveryman Brian Wells was kidnapped, had a homemade bomb locked around his neck, and was ordered to rob a bank.

Courtney said she wanted to explore the human side of the story rather than simply focus on the shocking crime. Her approach involved creating a film with a strong sense of place, intimate camerawork and a tone that could move between humor, tension and tragedy.

Coco Had More Than One Reason to Be There

The TIFF appearance also carried a distinctly personal touch because Coco is not merely cheering her mother on from the sidelines. The 22-year-old has a small part in Evil Genius, making the movie something of a family affair alongside Courtney's former sister-in-law Patricia Arquette and Patricia's daughter, Harlow Jane.

Courtney spoke warmly about having her daughter on set, telling E! News that she did not have to become an overprotective "mama bear" while directing her. Instead, she joked that she was more likely to tell Coco, "Get it together!"

“She holds her own,” Courtney said, adding that she did not need to be protective of her daughter. She also praised Coco as "a little force" and "an incredible actor," saying that everyone on set loved having her there.

Patricia also offered a glimpse into Coco’s acting background, explaining that she has been studying since she was very young and has performed in shows and plays. "They're fifth-generation actresses, our little daughters," Patricia said, referring to Coco and Harlow.

Courtney, meanwhile, described the experience of making the film as both difficult and rewarding. "This has been such a great experience," she said at the TIFF premiere, adding, "It's been hard and great, and I can't wait to see it with a bunch of people. I'm nervous and excited."

Courtney Had One Small Problem With Her Daughter

Courtney's enthusiasm for having Coco on set did not mean she suddenly had an easy time getting her daughter into family photos. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the Evil Genius premiere, Courtney was asked whether working together allowed her to spend some quality time with Coco.

"You know what, I loved seeing her on the set. She's such a good actor, and it was great to see her, and it was really fun. I just wish I could get her to take a picture with me."

When the interviewer asked, "She won't take a photo with Mama Bear?" Courtney answered, "No." The exchange makes what happened in Toronto particularly amusing. Coco did, in fact, pose with her mother at TIFF.

The Rare Mother-Daughter Moment Appearance Comes Into Focus

By September 12, Coco was alongside Courtney as she celebrated the premiere of Evil Genius. According to InStyle, it was a "very adorable, very rare appearance" for the mother and daughter.

Courtney had also appeared at other TIFF events the previous day, while Coco’s presence added a family dimension to the weekend. Coco has a small role in Evil Genius, making the festival appearance a chance for the two to celebrate a project they literally shared.

According to InStyle, the pair hugged and stood arm-in-arm, while their ’90s-inspired black looks added a nostalgic touch. They later shared more affectionate moments at the Road to the Golden Globes Kick-Off Party, including one tender photo of Coco resting her head against Courtney’s shoulder.

But Coco Had Already Been Turning Heads on Her Own

And there is another reason the TIFF appearance stands out. Just two days earlier, Coco had stepped onto the New York fashion scene by herself, attending the Chanel U.S. launch of Coco Mademoiselle Crush Absolu at Balthazar during New York Fashion Week on September 10.

For that appearance, Coco wore a delicate white slip dress with sheer detailing and thigh-high white stockings, completing the look with black pointed-toe shoes and a quilted black chain-strap handbag.

A close-up from the Chanel event offered an even clearer look at Coco, including her long, softly waved blonde hair and a small tattoo near her left shoulder. Her solo appearance also reignited the familiar online question of which parent Coco resembles most.

Entertainment Tonight highlighted the resemblance conversation in its coverage of the Chanel event. The post prompted plenty of debate, with one commenter arguing, "She's Courtney, but the eyes are David's!"

Another commenter suggested, "Yeah, they literally have opposite hair and eye color. Fraternal twins, maybe lol." A third person disagreed, writing, "No, she's not. She looks more like her dad, and the Arquettes like Patricia and Rosanna. But she's lovely!"

The discussion continued on Instagram, where one person wrote, "Not even, Coco has blonde hair & brown eyes, opposed to Courtney' dark brown hair & beautiful blue eyes [sic] 😮"

Another commenter said, "She looks like a young Kate winslet [sic]." A third added, "They barely look related. Do people not remember what courteney [sic] looked like in the 90s?"

The two appearances offered a different picture of Coco's place in the public eye. At Chanel, she was there entirely on her own; at TIFF, she was part of a family moment tied directly to her mother's long-awaited film.

This Wasn't Their First Recent Outing

The TIFF appearance also comes after another public outing that had already put Courtney and Coco back in front of fans. The pair were photographed together at Disneyland in August 2025, where online discussion centered more heavily on Courtney’s appearance and whether Coco bears a stronger resemblance to her father.

The outing Courtney captioned as "Disneyland with my girls" on her Instagram gave fans another opportunity to see the mother and daughter together, while the conversation around their latest appearance has taken a noticeably different direction.

After Courtney shared a series of photos from their day at the theme park, fans quickly flooded the comments section with reactions — many focusing on her face and speculating about possible cosmetic procedures.

"What's going on with her face? She just looks odd," one person wrote. "God, I love you so much, but what did you do to your face? You used to be so beautiful [sic]," another concerned fan added.

"The plastic surgery detracts from all the good!" echoed a third commenter. "She use to be so pretty 🥺, [sic]" wrote another. "I just saw a photo of her ear and her sideburn is gone... classic facelift side effect," one netizen observed.

Despite the criticism, some fans came to her defense, praising the actress for enjoying time with her family. "You look great, Courteney, sod the haters, you get stuck into that leg, nice to see you loving life with your family 😍, [sic]" one supporter commented.

Her husband also posted a series of heart and clapping hand emojis to share his happiness. "Coco looks like her father," one fan shared.

Courtney once shared her biggest beauty mistakes. Growing up, she constantly thought she was getting older despite still being young. "And that's just a bummer... a waste of time," she shared. "It's like a domino effect. It's like you don't realize that you look a little off, so then you keep doing more cause you look normal to yourself."

Ultimately, she didn't realize that what might look good to her made her look a certain way to other people. Another regret she had was "doing too many fillers and then having to have them removed."

She's glad that despite everything she's had done, she was able to reverse most of them. "Luckily, I was able to reverse most of that, and now, I'm actually just older," she concluded.
