Kate Gosselin's Former Housekeeper Reveals What Cameras Didn't Show Inside the 'Kate Plus 8' Home — Photos
The house looked spacious, the family photos filled the walls, and cameras captured plenty of everyday moments with Kate Gosselin and her eight children. But years after working inside the Pennsylvania home, a former housekeeper is revisiting an experience that left her questioning what was really happening behind closed doors — and one unexpected discovery still stands out in her memory.
Before Ashley H. became a former housekeeper for Kate Gosselin, she was a fan of Kate Plus 8 who admired the possibility of building a big family despite struggling with infertility herself.
In 2013, while studying for her master's degree in social work, Ashley watched the TLC reality series and imagined having a home filled with children someday, much like the one viewers saw on television.
She Once Watched Kate Gosselin's Family on TV and Dreamed of Having the Same Life
"I used to watch the show, like, 'My gosh, this is actually real. You can have infertility issues, and you can still have kids,'" Ashley, now 42, recalled in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. At the time, she was also working as a nanny when she came across an online job posting that would bring her into the Gosselin family's world.
The advertisement did not identify Kate by name, but it mentioned the possibility of living on the estate, and Ashley could tell the employer was wealthy. She eventually met Kate at Starbucks, where the mother of eight arrived in a sports car.

"She didn't say who she was [in the post], just that the nanny could live on the estate, and you could tell she was very, very wealthy," Ashley recalled. Their schedules did not align because of Ashley's university classes, so she accepted a position as Kate's house cleaner and occasional fill-in nanny instead.
It was an opportunity that initially seemed to fit the life Ashley hoped to build for herself, but what she says she encountered inside the house would eventually change how she viewed the family she had admired on television.
The Family Home Looked Like a Dream — But Ashley Says It Felt Different Behind the Scenes
When Ashley first arrived at the Gosselin residence in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, she remembers seeing large, beautiful family photographs displayed on the walls. The house was only about 20 minutes from Alvernia University, where she was studying, and its appearance initially reinforced the picture of family life she had formed while watching the show.
"I used to think, like, 'Oh, I can't wait to have this someday,'" she said. Ashley eventually became a mother to twins herself, but her experience working for Kate left her with a very different idea of what she wanted her own home to feel like.
"Now, I have my nice little house, and I have my canvas pictures of my family up on my walls. But I promised my house would never look unlived-in like Kate's."

The sprawling Pennsylvania property had plenty of space, including an expansive wooden deck, traditional living areas, a large kitchen, and multiple bathrooms. Its interior featured cream-colored cabinetry, patterned furnishings, dark wood accents, and decorative architectural details.
Some viewers have also questioned whether the house's traditional design looks outdated by modern standards, with some describing it as "super outdated." A YouTube video offering a look at the property gives viewers another chance to examine its style and layout.
But for Ashley, the most memorable part of her time there was not the home's size or decor. She claims that the carefully maintained surroundings reflected a household where even ordinary signs of family life were unwelcome.
Here is a closer look at the house where Ashley says she worked — and the spaces that viewers may recognize from the family's television years.

Ashley Claims Strict Rules Kept the House Looking Almost Untouched
While the house may have appeared comfortable and spacious, Ashley alleges that the rules governing everyday life inside it were unusually strict. She told PEOPLE that Kate maintained a "house manual" for staff, outlining expectations that included not taking pictures of the children and keeping the family dog out of the house except for the basement.
"The house was to look unlived-in at all times," Ashley said. The cleaning requirements reportedly extended well beyond ordinary household chores, with weekly and biweekly tasks that Ashley described as exceptionally meticulous. "She would have weekly chores, biweekly chores, and they would include having a toothpick and going around the edges of the fridge."
According to Ashley, the same emphasis on keeping the house pristine affected the children, who she says were not allowed to leave toys and other belongings lying around. "She wouldn't let the kids do anything," she said. "There was never toys out. There was never things out. They couldn't live."

She also claimed the children were allowed only "either one or two school outfits per week because it would cause too much laundry." For a household with eight children, that restriction would have made an already demanding daily routine even more complicated, particularly with school clothes, activities, and other family needs to manage.
Ashley also described Kate's interactions with her children as "robotic," alleging that affection was not distributed equally among them. "It was not loving," she said. "She very much made it known who was a favorite, who wasn't, who's annoying. Someone would come and pick the dog up for grooming, but she treated her kids basically worse than animals."
These are Ashley's recollections of her time working for the family, rather than scenes that viewers necessarily saw during the show's run. Her account paints a sharp contrast between the polished home viewers watched on television and the atmosphere she says she experienced as an employee.

Another Set of Photos Show a Different Side of Family Life Inside the House
Although Ashley described a home where everything was expected to remain in its place, footage from Kate Plus 8 also captured the everyday activity that comes with raising eight children.
One glimpse of that side of family life comes from an episode featuring the children decorating cupcakes. The kitchen counter is crowded with supplies, food packaging, containers, and other items around the sink, while cream cabinets and wooden-framed windows form the backdrop.
The image captures a busy kitchen workspace as Kate and the children take part in the cupcake-decorating activity featured on Kate Plus 8. It offers a contrast to Ashley's description of a home where everyday mess was reportedly discouraged.

Another set of images offers a look at the house as the family prepared for changes to the children's bedrooms. One photo shows a beige wall marked with irregular white patches, possibly left by repairs or the removal of wall decorations. Together, the images show the setting in which the family spent years appearing on television. However, Ashley says the atmosphere behind the scenes was what ultimately convinced her that she could not continue working there.

The Red Spoon in a Drawer Is the Detail Ashley Says She Never Forgot
Ashley says one moment in particular made her question what she believed was happening inside the Gosselin home. While opening a drawer containing school supplies, she came across a large, red plastic spoon. Because she considered the house so meticulously organized, she was surprised to find the object among the supplies.
When she asked the children why it was there, she says one of them immediately explained. "And instantly, I'm pretty sure it was Alexis who said, 'Oh, that's the spoon mommy uses when she gets mad.'"
The response stayed with Ashley, who says the spoon became a symbol of the concerns she had been developing during her time in the home. She claims she had already witnessed interactions between Kate and Collin that made her uncomfortable, but the children's response to the spoon pushed her closer to the decision to leave.
"I was like, 'Oh, okay. I can't work here anymore. This really is as bad as I think it is,'" she recalled. "That red spoon has haunted me for a long time."
Ashley says she ultimately worked for the family for only six months. The spoon incident is part of Ashley's account of what she says she witnessed; it is not, by itself, independent proof of abuse. Nevertheless, she says it became a turning point in her decision to report her concerns.

Ashley Says She Saw Kate Treat Collin Differently From His Siblings
The former housekeeper's allegations focus particularly on Collin, one of Kate and Jon Gosselin's sextuplets. Ashley says she observed what she considered a clear difference in how Kate treated him compared with the other children.
"She very much outwardly treated Collin different," Ashley told PEOPLE. "She 110 percent abused Collin. It's hard to almost put into words the specific hate that she had towards Collin. You could just feel it. I saw her grab Collin many, many times."
She further alleged that the behavior was not an isolated occurrence. "She did all the time," Ashley said of Kate's alleged treatment of Collin. "All the time. She'd rip him right out of his chair in the kitchen."

The allegations echo claims Collin has made about his childhood, which he revisits in his memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood.
Collin has described his relationship with his mother as deeply troubled, alleging that he experienced physical and psychological abuse before being sent to a behavioral institution as a child. Kate has denied allegations of abuse and has offered a different explanation for the decision to send him away.
Ashley says she decided to speak publicly because she wanted Collin to know that someone who had worked inside the home supported his account of the family dynamics she says she witnessed. Her allegations remain allegations, and Kate has not publicly responded to Ashley's specific claims in the PEOPLE report.

Collin Has Also Questioned Why He Was Sent Away as a Child
Collin's account of his childhood has attracted renewed attention as he has spoken about his experiences in interviews and in his memoir. Following Kate and Jon's 2009 divorce, Kate was granted full custody of their eight children: twins Madelyn and Cara, and sextuplets Collin, Alexis, Joel, Leah, Aaden and Hannah.
Collin was later sent to a behavioral institution, with Kate citing what she described as his unpredictable and violent behavior. Collin, however, has disputed that explanation and questioned why he was separated from the family.
In an interview, he suggested that his reluctance to continue appearing on television and his questions about the family's circumstances played a role in what happened.
"I was stubborn enough to question my mom," he said. "I questioned her about everything, and that came before the rebellion of me not wanting to be on camera and be a part of her circus." Collin has also said he began questioning his mother's explanation for why his father was no longer living with the family.
He recalled initially accepting what he was told but later considering whether there might be another side to the story. "And even as a 12-year-old, before I was sent away, I could start to consider both sides of things. I really could look at things in retrospect," he said.
He went on to speculate about his mother's possible motives, while acknowledging that he could not know for certain why she made the decision. "I don't know what reason it was, whether it was her reputation she was saving by sending me away from home, or whether it was the fact that maybe it's easier to sign a work permit for seven children that are voluntary, instead of seven children that are voluntary and one that's involuntary,” he said. “So there are a lot of things to question there."

Collin has also claimed that he spent 22 months at the facility and that his mother visited him only once for approximately 20 minutes. He recalled feeling unwell during that period and said the visit left him feeling blamed for the family's problems.
"It was about a year of me being there, and the whole time I had these glasses on and tears coming down my face. I was overweight. I was sick. They had me on all these medications," he said.
"And she's sitting there looking at her kid, who was clearly not who he used to be and sick and just out of it. And she's just telling me that I broke her family, that my siblings want nothing to do with me, all that stuff."

In a 2023 appearance on Vice TV's Dark Side of the 2000s, Collin also alleged that he was sent away because he had begun telling people what he believed was happening at home. "I was starting to tell people what was going on at home, and she caught wind of that and had to put me somewhere where I wouldn't be able to get the secrets out," he said at the time.

Kate has disputed her son's version of events and has previously described his perception of their relationship as a "distorted perception of reality." The competing accounts underscore the extent to which the family's private history has continued to draw public attention long after the cameras stopped documenting their everyday lives.
Kate's Side of the Story Has Also Been Made Public
The allegations against Kate have been disputed, and her representatives have previously defended her actions concerning Collin. In 2024, Kate's attorney, Richard Puleo, told an outlet that he did not believe Kate had done anything to "intentionally harm" her son. He also said "she did what she did to protect herself and her family" from what he characterized as "troubled behavior."
Kate has also addressed criticism surrounding Collin's memoir on social media. In a TikTok discussion about the book, she liked a comment from a user who said Collin would "regret all of this someday" and alleged that he had been "encouraged and enabled by other dysfunctional and mentally ill people." The user also expressed sympathy for Kate having to “relive this over and over” and described the situation as “gross."

"Exactly," Kate wrote in the same thread. "I had nothing to do with it, except for consent because it was medically necessary." Kate and Puleo did not respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment on Ashley's and Collin's allegations for the report.
The dispute leaves readers with two very different accounts of the family's history: Kate's stated position that her actions concerning Collin were medically necessary, and Collin's allegations that his treatment at home contributed to his difficult childhood.
Ashley says she hopes her account will help ensure that Collin's claims are not dismissed without consideration of what others may have witnessed.
Ashley Says She Called Child Services Before Leaving the Job
Ashley says her concerns eventually became too difficult to leave at work. She told PEOPLE that she contacted Children and Youth Services for Berks County before leaving the position, alleging that what she had witnessed affected her emotionally even after she returned home.
"I ended up getting sick because I started taking it home with me, because I didn't have my own kids and I didn't understand how somebody could be so nasty, downright evil and nasty to their own kids."

Collin Gosselin speaks to The US Sun in an interview published in full on June 27, 2026. | Source: YouTube/The US Sun
Her account also aligns with Collin's claim that reports were made about his treatment while he was growing up. In his memoir, Collin alleged that a child services investigation was triggered after he arrived at school in pain following an incident in which he said Kate yanked his ear. He also claimed he later learned that multiple reports had been made about her.
Ashley says she believes other people who worked around the family may have had similar concerns. "I know for a fact that I was not the only one who did that. I want to use this opportunity to not only back Collin that his mom was psychologically abusive to him, not to mention the physical."
Children and Youth Services for Berks County declined to comment to PEOPLE, citing "strict confidentiality laws." The agency's response does not confirm Ashley's account or the details of any reports, and the allegations should not be treated as established findings by the agency.
Still, Ashley says she hopes that speaking out will encourage others who may have witnessed troubling behavior to share their experiences, even if many years have passed.
Ashley Hopes Others Will Speak Up, Even Years Later
Now a social worker, mental health advocate, and mother of twins, Ashley says she wants her decision to speak publicly to have a purpose beyond revisiting a painful period in the Gosselin family's history.
She hopes other former employees or people who witnessed events in the home will feel able to share their experiences. "I really hope it will spark people to speak up, even if it's been 15 years later," she said.
Ashley also expressed support for Collin as he continues to tell his story. "I am so incredibly proud of Collin and hope he feels validated." For viewers who remember Kate Plus 8 as a show about the challenges of raising a large family, the allegations offer a sobering reminder that reality television cannot capture every aspect of life behind closed doors.
The house itself, with its large deck, traditional rooms, and family spaces, may look familiar to longtime viewers. But Ashley's account has shifted the focus away from the property's appearance and toward the experiences she says shaped her decision to leave.
Whether other former employees come forward remains to be seen. For now, Ashley's account adds another perspective to a family story that Collin has been trying to tell in his own words. Collin's memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, is available wherever books are sold.
